What About Club Chairs?

By:Julien Raynal

Considering the working lifestyle of modern times, one definitely needs a nice cozy home with comfortable furniture that soothes the tired body and mind. One can definitely imagine the popularity and demand that must be met by furniture that is made for comfortable reclining and resting. Comfort and relaxation brings to our mind club chairs and recliners.

Club chairs come under the category of luxury furniture that gives ultimate levels of comfort and relaxation. Club chairs are basically comfort chairs that are heavily upholstered and provided with stuffed arms and a reclining low back. In the past, these pieces of furniture served to meet the demanding relaxation and socializing needs of the high society. They were formal and high comfort providers, sought after for their unique appeal. Club chairs bring to our mind a picture of those English clubs that had smoking rooms filled with men enjoying the comforts of luxurious club chairs made of heavy wood on leather.

In the 1920s, club chairs typically came in dark colors, and were made of pig leather. The early form of club chairs had a distinct look because of the soft nails that were fashionably displayed. These club chairs were considered distinctly masculine, and were made of wood and leather mostly. The seats were covered with velvet, and were stuffed with straw, animal hair and feathers. All these were added to provide a softer feeling for the person enjoying the comfort of the seat.

Club chairs were the most popular piece of furniture for a very long time. In the Art Deco era, as is the case with other furniture, club chairs too changed to suit the latest fashion trends. They became more affordable. Club chairs were less ostentatious with a scaled down design. Instead of pig leather, sheep and cow hides were used more widely. In addition, the softer nails that were elegantly displayed earlier were less used, thereby providing a less formal appearance.

During these years, the French were also impressed by the popularity of these club chairs, and adopted the basic features and designed their own version to suit their needs. Bauhaus Wassily, which was the new version of club chairs, became popular. As is with the French in all aspects particularly in design and fashion, the new version of the club chairs was more modern and glamorous.

Club chairs remained popular all throughout the 1940s, but were temporarily stopped from production during the War. Post war, these club chairs came back in production, and continued to remain popular with increasing demand. There were some changes that were made on the new version of the post war club chair. Basically, animal hair and feathers were replaced by industrial foam, thanks to the innovative materials that were developed by the manufacturers. As far as looks were concerned, some changes happened here too. Club chairs came with more squared off arms, as against the rounded arms that were in practice earlier.

Even in the recent years, modified versions of club chairs are evident in the latest furniture stores and catalogs. To suit the needs of the current times, club chairs now come with weatherproof, ultra violet radiation resistant, and polypropylene covers.
